The lovers of Indian independent cinema know him as the brilliant creator of the cult LSD - Love Sex Aur Dhoka, a veritable transgressive bomb that had overthrown the industry in 2010. He is also the man to whom we owe the excellent political thriller Shangai, the most successful segment of Bombay Talkies and many other acclaimed memorable movies.
However since 2015 after his successful adaptation of Detective Byomkesh Bakshi, the filmmaker had remained discreet. Despite the high quality of his film, the results at the box office had been very mixed, pushing the producers of Yash Raj Films to put on hold the potential sequel. He returned that year as co-producer of Titli, another independent bomb noticed in many festivals, and then nothing.
And this new project will be there again produced by Yash Raj Films, who seems to want to experiment with smaller, riskier productions between two blockbusters. And after the satirical comedy, the social film, the detective film or the political film, Banerjee tackles a new genre.
According to an official statement, Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar will be a romantic film.
The filmmaker described the project in these terms. It is the story of a man and a woman who cannot stand each other. But they also cannot live without each other. A base that can both be classical and banal but also give rise to an interesting psychology if placed in good hands. The communiqué tells us a little more by saying that these two characters are united by their mistrust, their suspicion and hatred of each other.
If the first poster unveiled to formalize the project resembles any ordinary rom-com of Yash Raj Films, we dare to hope for an otherwise more original and exciting project with such a director. Parineeti Chopra said she had always dreamed of working with Dibakar Banerjee and is preparing to offer the public an intense character. That's all you want!
Only a shadow on the board, it will really be necessary that Arjun Kapoor works on his game if he does not want to be transparent once again and get eclipsed on screen by Parineeti, who is otherwise more talented and charismatic. The shooting of Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar will begin by the end of the year and the film is scheduled for a theatrical release next year. With almost three years of pause between this project and his last one, we hope that Banerjee returns in full form and that the film will justify the wait!
