The system speaker quality is not as high as the volume. The battery, despite the low power of SoC and the HD screen, does not perform well. The Redmi Note 5A is a sort of poster of the Xiaomi labeled philosophy. The Chinese company has built its fortune on value for money, which is also a key factor for landing in the West.
Of course, as we will see in the review if this Redmi Note 5A is still an entry-level phone. The polycarbonate body is one of the compromises that allowed Xiaomi to keep the price low.
Xiaomi Redmi Notes 5A has a polycarbonate unibody body. The feel of the touch is far from the premium. Although there are some aesthetic features like the 2.5D curvature of the back cover. Thanks to the satin finish of the body and the weight of 153 grams, this is a product with excellent grip.
The back cover has the presence of a protruding photo module, consisting of a single sensor. Front and top frames are particularly pronounced. In this sense, the lower side affects the presence of soft-touch navigation, buttons.
Hardware, performance and screen
The Redmi Note 5A has the Snapdragon 425 with 2GB of RAM and the Adreno 505 GPU. This is a hardware platform that has become almost standard in the low end of the smartphone market. The smartphone is able to provide adequate performance for basic operations. I also found excellent heat dissipation management. Xiaomi has performed a great job of optimization. The hardware platform of Redmi Note 5A on paper is far from the top.
The front has a 5.5-inch HD screen (1280 x 720, 267 PPI) made with IPS LCD technology. This is one of the components on which Xiaomi has slashed resources to contain the price list.
On board, we find Android 7.1.2 Nougat, customized with the usual MIUI 8 interface. In this sense, the Redmi Note 5A is no exception. The MIUI 8 confirms a smart interface, rich in useful features.
The Chinese company also confirmed that the Redmi Note 5A is among the candidates to receive the MIUI 9. It will introduce a whole series of novelties. In general, the software is well-optimized, and can also run a SoC like the Snapdragon 435.
As mentioned in the opening, Redmi Note 5A can count on a single rear camera. The module consists of a 13 MP sensor with f/2.2 optics, backed by the usual flash LED. Daytime photos are good, keeping in mind the price range. At night there is an inevitable noise. Of course, we are not in the presence of a top-level photographic module.
The focus is not very fast, not too precise but acceptable. Exposure is good while white balance is not very faithful. In any case, day photographs are usable, night or low lighting conditions are poor and rich in noise.
Audio and reception
Xiaomi has integrated a single loudspeaker on the underside. This positioning allows you to place the Note Redmi 5A on a surface without covering it. In general, the quality is not high, as is the volume, even though it is almost impossible to get any notification.
Of course, volume-related talk comes into play with handsfree. There's no 3.5 mm audio jack, even if the headphones are not in the box. The headphone output is average.
Note 5A is a Dual-SIM smartphone. The general reception is good. I did not notice any specific signal loss or criticality. There is also Bluetooth 4.2, A-GLONASS GPS, infrared port to control TVs and other devices, FM radio. Unfortunately, the NFC is absent. The 3080 mAh integrated battery does not do miracles.
Notebooks 5A is a smartphone that works. The device has no major issues. The low end of the market is the segment around which Xiaomi has built its fortune. The design of Redmi Note 5A is already seen. The only note of merit is on the top profile, there is the infrared port to control the TV.
