Book Review: The Sinister Silence: Moitrayee Bhaduri

The Sinister Silence by Moitrayee Bhaduri is compelling and can be read all in one breath and what characterizes this crime novel different than others is the precision and depth. The events follow each other well and the story, far beyond the facts of the proceedings, takes on interesting social implications, families, and, more profoundly human.

Set in Mumbai, leading software engineer Saahil is found battling for his life on a rainy morning, which looks like a case of attempted suicide. While doctors are uncertain about Saahil's survival, the police find out the blood drenched body of Saahil's co-worker Farzad.

As Saahil's family calls in ex-super cop turned detective Mili Ray to probe, she and her team comprising Advocate Gatha and ex-army officer Anubhav jump into this case, which is turning murkier by the hour with suspects being a invidious co-worker, an IT kingpin, an at odds companion, or someone else. Oblivious that a scheming murderer is pestering her, Ray races towards a treacherous ambush while deadly attacks continue to preoccupy the IT world.

The author confirms the extraordinary narrative skills shown in her debut book. This real thriller novel is well structured with the plot is much more complex than supposed. The narrative style is rich descriptions and digressions but in any case does not distract the reader's attention from the plot.

The book should be read with the attention that reserves one of the usual crime mysteries. The author gives sharpness and sensitivity to the narrative aspects which are certainly rare in this kind of literature. In addition, it adds a perfect balance between descriptive pages, places, and events of the proceedings, and introspective pages, especially those focused on the psychology of the detective.

It’s a compelling novel that does not neglect the nuances of feelings and relationships that bind the characters. Indeed, it gives them human traits and deep that, in a few lines, and all this is setting for a thriller full of surprises and psychologically demanding colourful figures.

A thriller full of twists with a complex plot that linearly interweave stories making them more interesting and colourful. The procedural history is clean and accessible to all, but far from obvious. The novel ends as you least expect it, and is really amazing. The narrative all through is imaginative, elegant and flowing, which engages directly with the lights and shadows typical of a detective novel.

It is, in fact, the refined and careful descriptions that give the novel that extra something that the reader surely would love. The suspense created by the author holds dear in an indomitable narrative style tone that holds the enthusiasm of the reader from the first page with surprising plot twists, and no doubt brilliant.

A book, then, that certainly cannot be missed in the library of this genre, with a novel, in any case, to be kept under the Christmas tree of even the staunchest critics of the thrillers.
