Book Review: Voicemates: Anamika Mishra

VoiceMates by Anamika Mishra is the story of young aspiring singers struggling with their first successes but also with the first disappointments, the first obstacles and the music thus becomes a metaphor for love and life itself with every little achievement requires commitment, hard work and determination.

Tulip Hill is beautiful, brilliant, and restless and a subservient and gifted daughter to her martinet parents. She has been a topper all through her school, as her parents sought after her to be and at the present, they would like her to join in one of the top colleges, however Tulip harbours the aspiration to become a singer, for music is her only obsession that helps her glimpse through life’s miseries.

Then there is clever, laid-back and flirty Sam. who also shares his love for music and enters the biggest duet competition together. Yet, both dream of a different life with the two extremes that are attracted to destroy who would break down the boundaries, looking for love.

The fluid style of the narrative is almost like a stream of consciousness, which is deposited on the pages and wandering from one page to another, from one episode to another as you would read, in an evening on your red sofa, a narrative of countless characters.

The writing is exceptionally smooth and never boring where you would feel the music, the irony, the contradictions, the joy of living and the boundless love for all forms of beauty. The pleasure, the happiness that music provides are together of emotion and intellect that create a freedom that is awareness of one's desires, and a free thinking.

And the book, true to life, is this ethical dimension, as well as aesthetic. Its universal and metaphysical language requires balance between intellect and emotion and always a passionate attitude. Looking at the phenomenology of sound, the author puts music in relationship to time.

The music so understood is style, pace and way of life. And since it is expressed only through sound and takes place at a precise time, it is ephemeral and natural. The book is, good, not only for the plot and characters but the balance achieved in the narrative and in the structure of the story with the alternation of funny scenes, dialogues with secondary characters and those of the couple, the love scenes and the collision, everything is well balanced and well expressed, so that we arrive at a happy ending with a nice smile.

The effect was more intense and personal and the writing style of the author manages to make this novel crackling and full of verve, transforming in romantic events with a lot of fun and even the most surreal scenes.
