Book Review: The Many Lives of Ruby Iyer: Laxmi Hariharan

The Many Lives of Ruby Iyer Laxmi Hariharan

The Many Lives of Ruby Iyer, by Laxmi Hariharan, is a narrative full of adventure, glamour and romance that moves far and wide through the streets of Bombay, and portrays the city through the many stories of the protagonist, and gradually lays bare wires stretched between penthouses overlooking sparkling ocean and sea shanties.

When Ruby Iyer's best friend Pankaj is taken hostage by the repressive Dr Kamini Braganza, she has to do something, including taking the assistance of the inexplicable Vikram Roy, a cop-turned-rogue on an operation to save Bombay, to rescue Pankaj and the city under total destruction by Dr Braganza's evil terror plans.

The book leaves the reader always in suspense, where you never know what can happen from one line to the other with a delusional doctor bent on annihilation and a cop willing to do anything to save the metropolis he serves, amidst Ruby’s growing feelings for him. At the end of the book the life of our protagonist becomes more complicated than ever and thus begins a journey that will bring our protagonist to come to grips with a catch-22 situation of choice.

Nobody ever performs an action that clash with their own character, no one ever says a wrong sentence or that is inconsistent with the idea that we took him up to that point and there is a deep maturation in some cases, but everything is done with the right regularity and without sudden jumps from one attitude to another.

The writer is obviously matured with the style was complete, as well as the plot went out, thickening and enriching itself more and more as in this book the author gives evidence of a great talent in building an articulated plot, never too complex, decorated with constant twists and breathtaking turns.

The characters remain the key point to the whole saga, so well built to stand out with vividness and an unsurpassed realism where every single person appearing in this book, feels like a key character or appearance, with an exemplary characterization of a personality so defined as to leave an indelible imprint in the narrative.

The book is peppered with well built stunning action scenes, intense romantic moments, strategically positioned twists where we least expect, with the result that each of them come upon us suddenly and brutally with the position in front of an eventuality that we would have never waited until the first few pages with this ability of the author amaze continuously, together with the skill to describe scenes of any type, from the romantic to the most adventurous to the most poignant.

The book is full of action, mystery, magic, love, friendship that will satisfy your expectations and hardly disappoint in an always on the move intriguing city, surrounded by unforgettable characters, with the author tell a fascinating story, compelling, terribly exciting and sometimes even moving.

With Ruby’s mysterious personality, her innumerable fears, her sarcasm masks increasingly fragile and elusive, the author leave no respite and drag a surreal atmosphere on her, drawing a large plot with many facets, which forces the reader in a state of perpetual suspense.

In this exciting book you become aware of the terrible truth with the language however is clear and simple, where surely the writer wanted to hit the mind of the reader in an attempt to bring people closer to reality through a very incisive narrative amidst the intersection of friendship, love and violence that make us realize that in life you can meet everything and that only real people are able to stay there next.

Maybe the intent of the writer, is also to acquaint the reader how to live in Bombay, allowing them to weave the tragic situation of a place which is under destruction by despots and would allow you to understand the way of life of a place with an assorted culture and the meaning of life, and feel a place with our own eyes.

What a pleasant surprise this novel took basis between the stack of ones to read where we ride with a pleasant lightness in addressing topics such as diversity, abduction, and survival and is nice because you feel that this story comes to urgency of being told so by the author, not to teach something much less to deal purposefully one of the many themes that are found among the pages.

This is a book that flows very well and is characterized by the characters and by the incredible scenery described in depth with the chain of events is always very well balanced between action and intimacy, where one after another, you will devour every single page of the book, with an enthusiasm that continues unabated and that will lead you to finish this volume in a few hours.
