Mattar are the peas and paneer is fresh Indian cottage cheese that is generally made in house where delicious cubes of cottage cheese in cashew nut sauce are garnished with leaves of fenugreek and coriander. A dish that promises to be a rousing success.


1 cup green peas
2 tomatoes
2 onions
1 cup paneer
1 cup yogurt
3 tbsp oil
1 tsp cumin seeds
2 bay leaves
1 inch cinnamon stick
1 tsp ginger
2 cloves garlic
1 tsp coriander powder
1 tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp chili powder
1 tsp paprika
1 tsp sugar
1 tsp cornstarch
2 cups water
Pinch of asafoetida
Chopped coriander leaves
Salt to taste

Recipe Method:

Cube the paneer into half inch pieces and fry them on medium heat until the paneer becomes light golden. Take the paneer out and place on a paper towel.

Mix cornstarch with little water and keep aside. Blend the tomatoes, half of the chopped onions, garlic and ginger to make a paste.

Heat the oil in a pan. Add the remaining onion, ginger, garlic, asafoetida, cumin seeds, bay leaves and cinnamon and fry until the onion is golden brown.

Add the tomato paste, coriander, turmeric, chili powder and paprika. Cook til the mixture reduces to half.

Add the green peas and a cup of water. Cook on medium heat. When the peas are tender, add the salt, paneer and corn starch mix. Cover the pan and and simmer for 20 minutes.

Serve the matar paneer sprinkled with coriander.
